Calum Baker
Documentarist Errol Morris originally went to northern Florida for a project titled Nub City, about one township's bizarrely frequent instances of limb loss, which might have been a mass insurance scam. After his investigation proved unwelcome, Morris settled for making this unusual film, in which he interviews various citizens of the titular small town (population: less than 800) about nothing in particular. An enthusiastic turkey-hunter takes us on a jaunt through the woods and talks about his past conquests. One elderly animal-wrangler, who's "been bit by everything", shows us a possum and a tortoise. An under-stimulated cop sits around in his car waiting for something to happen. You'll find yourself chuckling at some of the more eccentric observations and turns of phrase. Yet, there's no hint of irony to Morris's unforced film, as he lovingly follows and engages his participants, crafting the interviews themselves into small works of art. There's a languid looseness to the shaggy structure, which may frustrate viewers looking for a bit of momentum and purpose. But in trying to capture something of the mood of this small part of the world, Morris and cameraman Ned Burgess achieve something oddball, folksy and a little imaginative that, at just 55 minutes long, certainly doesn't outstay its welcome.
