Calum Baker
Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon and their roster of hilarious impersonations return for this first sequel to their original BBC comedy road trip. This time, the pair (playing fictionalised versions of themselves) take a trip down Italy's western coast, from Liguria to Rome to Capri, in service of a newspaper travelogue series inspired by the wanderings of the Romantic poets. Here, their dynamic has reversed somewhat, with a pensive Rob now chasing a serious film role and fretting over his career and family life, while a relatively sanguine Steve is more content to go with the flow. It's another nicely handled character piece that deepens the themes of the previous film. Brydon proves particularly impressive at picking apart his affable public image via some intimate (and never overplayed) scenes of self-doubt and even marital infidelity. Director Michael Winterbottom judges the tone and pace perfectly, making the most of the change in setting by carefully juggling the succulent meals, sun-kissed scenes and laugh-out-loud ad-libbed skits with the midlife melancholy of his characters. While this lacks the novelty of the 2010 original, it's still the most well-rounded of the duo's follow-up trips.
