Screenwriter Daniel Mainwaring was best known for urban crime sagas and, essentially, he relocates the story of Ma Barker to the Arizona plains in this lively western. With more than 100 oaters to his credit, Lesley Selander was one of the most prolific directors in the genre's history and he makes splendid use of the Utah locations, as Harry Lauter curbs his vengeful intentions in order to escort the stagecoach carrying the outlaw brothers who had killed his sister in a robbery. However, their pistol-packing momma is posing as a dotty passenger to ensure they escape from lawman Don "Red" Barry. He concocted the source story, which afforded perennial second-stringer Lauter a rare leading role. But the star's thunder was roundly stolen by Hanna Landy, the Hungarian-born Actors Studio veteran, unforgettable as the fearsome matriarch who hides six-shooters in her bloomers. Less memorable is the debuting Jodi Mitchell, who would never make another film after playing Lauter's pacifist fiancée.
