Following 1970s-set slasher X and its Technicolor melodrama-inspired prequel, Pearl, writer/director Ti West completes his unconventional indie horror trilogy with another well-executed homage. This time he's paying tribute to sleazy thrillers of the 80s -with the work of Brian De Palma a clear influence. Set in 1985, this finds X's "final girl", Maxine Minx (Mia Goth), now relocated to Los Angeles where she hopes to leave her adult film career behind and achieve Hollywood stardom. But matters are complicated by the looming presence of both a serial killer known as the Night Stalker and a mysterious glove-wearing figure, with several of Maxine's new friends winding up dead in exceedingly gory circumstances. Goth turns in another sensational performance in the lead role, while Kevin Bacon is the standout of a starry supporting cast, playing against type as a deeply menacing private eye. There's plenty going on beneath the bloody surface, with the film digging into the moral panics of the decade, while West concludes Maxine's era-spanning story with satisfying flair.
