Originally planned as a social portrait of Sudan's capital, this documentary was transformed into a psychological interrogation of conflict and its impact when the subjects and film-makers were forced to flee. After the country collapsed into civil war in 2023, the participants were scattered into neighbouring nations. But the determined documentarians - Anas Saeed, Rawia Alhag, Brahim Snoopy and Timeea M Ahmed, along with British director Phil Cox - brought everyone back together in a studio in Nairobi, Kenya. There, the cast recall the outbreak of violence, their thoughts accompanied by green-screen animation. Assembling these participants in one space also enables them to discuss their homeland more broadly, a conversation which would have been unlikely in Khartoum given their different walks of life: the group includes a civil servant, a resistance committee member, a tea shop owner and two child bottle-collectors. A raw consideration of what has been lost, the film also represents an act of collective healing as the quintet talks about their dreams for the future, again aided by animation, which adds a strong element of hope.
