Jayne Nelson

Film-maker Ella Glendining was born with shortened thigh bones and no hip joints, a rare condition that means she has never seen another person who looks the same way. In her Bafta-nominated documentary, she seeks out others who can share their own disability journeys, from small children to adults who were written off simply for being "different". Glendining is an oasis of calm as she explores both her condition and people's responses to it. She also visits a surgeon in the US who is a leading expert on lengthening leg bones, a procedure most usually carried out on infants, who cannot give their consent. The concept of being "normal" and an individual's right to choose their own body shape are topics that weigh heavily on Glendining's mind. Despite its low budget and unflashy nature, this personal odyssey packs a punch.
