Summary

The award-winning coming-of-age drama based on Alice Oseman's graphic novels concludes with a feature-length finale instead of a fourth series. Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) and Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) are deliriously in love but their relationship is about to be tested for the first time. While Nick is preparing to leave for university and experience independence from his mother Sarah (Anna Maxwell Martin replacing Olivia Colman), Charlie has new challenges to overcome at school with the help of teachers Mr Ajayi (Fisayo Akinade) and Mr Farouk (Nima Taleghani). Fellow love birds Tao Xu (Will Gao) and Elle Argent (Yasmin Finney), and Tara Jones (Corrina Brown) and Darcy Olsson (Kizzy Edgell), reaffirm their commitments to each other.

Review

David Craig

After three award-winning series, Netflix’s trailblazing drama bows out with a two-hour finale; one that puts doting schoolboys Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) and Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) through the emotional wringer.

Having been head-over-heels for years, the couple (and their friends) are fretting about being torn apart by post-school plans. The upheaval even drives newly-legal drinker Nick to troubling alcohol abuse.

This storyline, combined with a sharp increase in sex scenes and overdue scrutiny of Nick and Charlie’s codependence, makes this a more mature offering than previous series.

That said, the show has never ignored the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth, from bullying to mental health issues and the dreaded uncertainty of coming out. And once again, its cute aesthetics and earnest relationships sweeten this tough reality, bringing hope for a brighter future to young fans.
