A weekend with the in-laws provides the perfect platform for Ghostbusters-style spooks and Meet the Parents-esque squabbles in this enjoyably zany, queer-positive horror comedy. Rohan (Nik Dodani) is planning to propose to his boyfriend Josh (Brandon Flynn) during a stay at an idyllic holiday home with their parents. However, Rohan's conservative folks (Edie Falco and Brian Cox) aren't fans of freewheeling Josh or his parents (Lisa Kudrow and Dean Norris), leading to an atmosphere of tension. Things worsen when Rohan's dad starts behaving strangely, and the warring families must set aside their differences when they discover an ancient evil is haunting their rental property. The supernatural goings-on lean knowingly on familiar tropes, and director Craig Johnson (The Skeleton Twins) has great fun orchestrating the cheesy mayhem, with nice touches including peeling wallpaper, a very 80s occult ritual, and some effectively gnarly prosthetics. What really makes the film pop, though, is the stellar cast, with seasoned pros Kudrow and Parker Posey (as the property's oddball owner) knocking the comedy out of the park. The result is brilliantly high-energy and camp, but with a heartfelt message at its core.
