Dave Golder

This low-budget post-apocalypse flick is set on a remote island where a father trains his daughter to fight giant, world-ravaging monsters. Luke Evans is the unnamed dad whose wife (Milla Jovovich) is away leading the battle against the insectoid Breakers while he teaches daughter Willa (Billie Boullet) the art of survival. But when a shipwrecked girl washes up on their secluded beach, Willa makes a fateful choice. While Evans's cheesy, grandiose narration about myths and storytelling work to provide this formulaic monster movie some measure of gravitas, there's little on offer here that you haven't seen done better in countless episodes of The Walking Dead or The Last of Us. The monsters (and their more budget-friendly half-human offspring) are mostly kept in the wings while the plodding human drama and obvious twists play out in the foreground. Some decent acting and cinematography give the film a veneer of respectability, but at heart this is sheer B-movie bobbins.
