Terry Staunton

Liam Neeson stars in this entertaining revival of the films from the late 80s and early 90s, playing the police-detective son of Leslie Nielsen's Frank Drebin. While investigating a high-profile murder, the hapless cop strikes up a relationship with femme fatale Pamela Anderson. The bare-bones plot is little more than a skeleton for a relentless succession of gags spoofing bygone action-thriller tropes. Showcasing a talent for comic timing he's rarely been called upon to exercise, Neeson gamely parodies his previous roles as a straight-faced action hero, most notably in the Taken trilogy. The lampooning throughout is served up with a keen eye for detail and with huge affection, and the constant references to the earlier movies in the series should find favour with long-time fans. For all the film's harking back to the past, though, there's an equal freshness and vitality to proceedings that bodes well for further instalments of the reboot.
