A crack Canadian tunneller is recruited to burrow into the underground laboratory of a crazed German scientist in this familiar but fun entry into the "war horror" subgenre. Rossif Sutherland leans into dad Donald's understated Kelly's Heroes performance to play the unruly but brave lieutenant on the Western Front in 1918 sent on a mission into the bowels of the earth, where hideously malformed, zombie-like German soldiers await. The vibe is more Second than First World War, right down to the froth-mouthed Nazi-in-waiting performance by Robert Stadlober as the deranged scientist orchestrating the mayhem in the trenches. There isn't a lot to see that fans of Frankenstein's Army (2013) or Overlord (2018) won't have seen before. But Leo Scherman's unfussy, brisk direction keeps the story rattling along at speed, making this a satisfying if claustrophobic genre outing with well-handled action and plenty on offer for lovers of shock and gore.
