Director Enzo G Castellari is best known for inspiring Quentin Tarantino with his 1978 Macaroni combat flick, Inglorious Bastards. However, this earlier offering from the late sixties is every bit as entertaining, as Castellari plays fast and loose with historical fact while making the most of a meagre budget. The action follows Wehrmacht lieutenant Francisco Rabal's sabotage unit who pose as soldiers rescued from the beaches of northern France. As key radar stations are attacked, however, Dunkirk veteran Frederick Stafford senses foul play and is directed by Air Marshal Van Johnson to eradicate the impostors before the Battle of Britain begins. Courage is commended on each side, although the cosmopolitan casting means certain performances tend towards the wooden. Nevertheless, Castellari and cinematographer Alejandro Ulloa make innovative use of split screens, forced perspectives, colour filters and the massed ranks of extras to disguise the cheapness of the mattes and miniatures employed to bring an epic sense of scale to an exciting story.
