Summary
Wartime drama directed by Steve McQueen, starring Saoirse Ronan, Harris Dickinson and Elliott Heffernan. Nine-year-old George is living with his mother, Rita, at her father's house in Stepney, while London suffers from German bombing raids. Rita is persuaded to evacuate George to the countryside with other children, but the boy leaps from the train and returns to London where a series of adventures awaits.

A mother and her son are separated during the 1940 Nazi bombing raids that have devastated London in 12 Years a Slave director Steve McQueen's patchy, picaresque drama. Saoirse Ronan plays East Londoner Rita, who tearfully must send her boy George (Elliott Heffernan) away with the other young evacuees leaving the capital. But distraught at being torn away from the apron strings, George jumps the train and starts heading back home, facing a wild adventure as he aims to reunite with his mother. McQueen's re-creation of the Blitz is brilliantly done, right from the opening when a fireman loses control of his hose amid the fiery chaos. While McQueen credibly shows an ethnically diverse picture of London at this time, the characterisation is overripe, especially when Stephen Graham and Kathy Burke arrive as two thieves who take advantage of George. Despite epic set pieces and an impressive cast - including The Jam's Paul Weller as Rita's father - the result feels a touch undercooked.
