Calum Baker

Master director David Cronenberg returned to the screen after an eight-year hiatus with this bold and artfully grisly sci-fi. Set in a near-future where human evolution has taken some odd turns, the film follows the aptly named Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen) and Caprice (Léa Seydoux), an artist duo who perform live surgery to spectators: he grows extraneous organs and she harvests them. There's a twisty noir plot involving government agents and evolutionary radicals, but Cronenberg is far more interested in exploring the philosophical implications of his conceit and the atmosphere of his freaky future than in constructing a straightforward narrative. It hardly matters: amply aided by Douglas Koch's moody cinematography, Howard Shore's lush score and plenty of classic "body horror" weirdness, the director delivers one of his finest visions. The cast is terrific, too, not least Mortensen as the grotesque, Frankensteinian lead and a squirrelly Kristen Stewart as his biggest fan.
