Terry Staunton

Douglas Smith stars as a young man suffering from amnesia in this post-apocalyptic zombie thriller with a psychological twist. He is given sanctuary at the remote farmhouse of an older woman survivalist (Carrie-Anne Moss) but each time he tries to unlock the past and find his missing girlfriend - between battles with the flesh-hungry undead - he suffers a fresh breakdown that wipes more recent memories from his mind. Writer/director Lowell Dean is relatively sparing with the gore, with his visually impressive human-plant hybrid zombies serving largely to punctuate the deeper mental torment of the central character, via flashbacks to happier times with the love of his life. Moss is an enigmatic presence as his protector and guide, the world-weary pragmatist who has long accepted that the world has changed for good. The puzzle pieces are sprinkled throughout the narrative with style and subtlety, although some viewers may be quicker than others in working out how they all fit together. Nonetheless, it's an intriguing drama played out with understated finesse by two fine actors.
