Summary

Courtney Eaton and Thomas Mann impress in this touching but rote issues-drama. Twenty-something Riley (Eaton) struggles with body dysmorphia and an eating disorder, but upon leaving rehab finds a friend in the amiable Ethan (Mann). The next year or two find the pair falling in and out of love, their romantic ups and downs mirroring Riley's difficult recovery. Actor Brittany Snow makes a confident directorial debut, pacing the drama well and drawing naturalistic performances out of a solid cast that includes her X co-star Scott Mescudi. But Snow's screenplay, co-written with Becca Gleason, tends toward contrivance in its efforts to chart Riley's twisty personal journey and ultimately fails to overcome a sense of emotional insistence. Still, Eaton and Mann share a likeable and convincing chemistry,and their performances go a long way to papering over the cracks in this slight but empathetic film.
