Summary

Action comedy starring Nicolas Cage as a fictional version of himself. After losing out on the role of a lifetime, jaded, cash-strapped Hollywood star Nick Cage travels to Mallorca to fulfil the fantasy of a rich super-fan who wants him to read his screenplay. But once there, Cage is recruited by two CIA agents to investigate a political kidnapping - and is plunged into a plot that's just like one of his bombastic blockbusters.

Nicolas Cage sends himself up in style in this meta action-comedy from writer/director Tom Gormican, which plunges a fictional version of the actor into a predicament akin to his more bombastic efforts. After losing out on the role of a lifetime, a jaded Cage quits acting and agrees to travel to Mallorca to fulfil the fantasy of rich super-fan Javi (Pedro Pascal), who wants him to read his screenplay. Once there, Cage is recruited by Tiffany Haddish and Ike Barinholtz's CIA agents to help with a political kidnapping. Although the potential for overindulgence looms large, Gormican and co-writer Kevin Etten ensure that things are far more silly than smug, delivering set pieces on a big and amusingly small scale, with a paranoia-heavy acid trip a highlight. Most of all, though, it's great fun watching Cage gamely reassume his action persona in a knowing and intentionally preposterous context, and he throws himself into the high jinks and self-ridicule with aplomb.
