There's much to admire in Pauline Loquès's French-language debut feature about a young man contemplating his fate ahead of potentially life-saving medical treatment. Théodore Pellerin plays Nino Clavel, the Parisian who discovers he has throat cancer on the eve of his 29th birthday. He spends the weekend before the start of emergency chemotherapy wandering the city because he has lost the keys to his apartment. An introvert stunned by his HPV-related diagnosis, Nino avoids mentioning it those close to him as he seeks to kill time by dropping in on his mother (Jeanne Balibar), ex-girlfriend (Camille Rutherford), and best friend (William Lebghil). The latter throws him a surprise birthday party, but it's a chance meeting with an old classmate (Salomé Dewaels) and her young son that helps Nino embrace his emotions and fears, as well as the sobering realisation that every second counts. It's difficult to miss the similarities between this film and Agnès Varda's classic Cleo from 5 to 7 (1961). Yet this is competent film-making, with Loquès's observant camera capturing the vitality of everyday life, and making it seem vibrantly worthwhile. Pellerin (Solo) is excellent, too, remaining engaging despite Nino's initial impassivity, as he is coaxed into taking stock and summoning his resolve.
