This violent, gang-war thriller is a stunning piece of film-making. Director Takeshi Kitano shows a complete understanding of the Hollywood gangster movie and its Japanese counterpart, the yakuza film. Moreover, he demonstrates a mastery of technique in the magnificent beach hideout segment in which he uses trick effects, imaginative camera angles and a range of comic styles to question the value of the yakuza's existence and to build tension towards the superb silhouette shoot-out. What's more, he also gives a towering performance as a disillusioned hitman.
