Tom Dawson

Adapted from Rosella Postorino's novel At the Wolf's Lair, which was itself inspired by a controversial 2012 newspaper interview, this fascinating drama focuses on a group of young German women who were forced to sample Hitler's meals, in case the Führer's dishes had been poisoned. It's 1943, and 20-something Rosa (Elisa Schlott) has fled from Berlin to her in-laws in Eastern Prussia, only to be conscripted by the SS for tasting duties at a barracks near Hitler's military HQ. Rosa and her colleagues soon learn that not carrying out strict orders incurs brutal punishment. Silvio Soldini directs intelligently, keeping the war off screen while ensuring its impact permeates every frame: Rosa is desperate for news of her soldier husband; a radio broadcast from Hitler confirms the failure of Operation Valkyrie; and the tasters fear the possibility of an invasion by Russian soldiers. It makes for a tense and intimate drama, which is carefully shot and convincingly acted by its ensemble cast.
