Bikini Bottom's loveable yellow sea sponge returns for a throwaway fourth theatrical feature. This aquatic adventure sees SpongeBob (voiced by Tom Kenny) run into the Flying Dutchman (Mark Hamill), a cursed pirate ghost who seeks freedom by swapping places with an innocent soul. When SpongeBob and his trusted starfish friend Patrick (Bill Faggerbakke) join the Dutchman's crew, a rescue party sets out after them, led by SpongeBob's boss, Mr Krabs (Clancy Brown). Playing out like an episode of Scooby-Doo, right down to the green, ghoulish visuals, it's a typically madcap outing for the underwater gang. There's plenty of weirdness mixed in, including the requisite live-action moments, as well as a three-headed seagull, a Hollywood shark called JK Fishlips, and a fishy cameo by rapper Ice Spice. Sadly, the nautical nonsense never quite knits together and the excellent voice cast is left to soak up a damp squib of a story.
