Fans of The Perfect Storm (2000) may enjoy this similarly themed dramatisation of a true story; even the film's posters are almost identical. It's 2009, and four friends go fishing off the Florida coast. NFL players Marquis Cooper (Quentin Plair) and Corey Smith (Terrence Terrell) are joined by Nick Schuyler (Shazam's Zachary Levi) and Will Bleakley (Marshall Cook). When an accident causes their boat to capsize, they're left clinging to the upturned hull during a storm. Copshop director Joe Carnahan nails the shivery misery of their plight. But his film also delivers unintended (and regrettable) comic beats from dumbed-down writing. One character, for example, details the symptoms of hypothermia as though he's reading from Wikipedia. A baffling decision to show water droplets on the camera lens also backfires, as the gimmick results in obscured action and actors' expressions lost under ripples. This annoyingly blurring effect occasionally happens on land, too, with scenes shot through rain-lashed windows. These shipwrecked sailors deserved a far clearer vision for their emotional voyage.
