It's 1982, four years after the events of race-against-time retro horror The Black Phone (2021), but Finney (Mason Thames), survivor of Ethan Hawke's masked fiend "The Grabber", remains traumatised. Meanwhile, younger sister Gwen (Madeleine McGraw), whose dreams helped to save him, is finding her psychic ability more of a curse than a gift, not knowing what is real, a nightmare or a prophetic vision. Indeed, it's a dream about a frozen lake - and its mutilated ghostly denizens - that inspires the siblings to investigate, only to be stranded at an isolated, blizzard-hit youth camp where the beyond-the-grave evil of the Grabber becomes ever more tangible and deadly. Thames and McGraw have literally grown into their roles and deliver compelling performances as they struggle with their own personal angst, whether it's Finney's survivor guilt or Gwen's fear she will end up like her suicidal mother. The first film was a serial-killer thriller with a side order of the supernatural, but this riveting sequel thoroughly embraces the paranormal and the gruesome in all its gory glory. Meanwhile, the dream sequences, seemingly shot on scratchy 70s film stock and recalling director Scott Derrickson's earlier spine-chiller Sinister, ooze unsettling menace and deliver some hearty jump-scares.
