One of the most shocking episodes from Danish criminal history is here reimagined with flair by versatile director Magnus von Horn (The Here After). In Copenhagen in 1919, impoverished Karoline (Vic Carmen Sonne) endures a series of crushing misfortunes - including eviction, romantic disappointment, and an unwanted pregnancy - before she falls in with shady sweetshop owner Dagmar (Trine Dyrholm). Dagmar runs an illegal adoption agency, placing the babies of desperate women with new parents. After giving up her own child, Karoline begins working for Dagmar as a wet nurse, and makes a shocking discovery. A masterful adult fairy tale with a striking black-and-white aesthetic, the film takes us on a nightmarish and visually astonishing journey that's crammed with character. Sonne is mesmerising in her exhaustion and agony, while a pitch-perfect Dyrholm compellingly captures the banality of evil. The material is steeped in misery, but it never feels like a slog thanks to von Horn's inventive and idiosyncratic execution.
