Director Joshua Wong's dystopian thriller is set in an almost completely submerged Hong Kong following a tsunami. After losing her younger sister to the floodwater, Asha (Kara Wang) has lived alone for the past five years. She's built a home in a soggy high-rise, kitting it out with low-tech hacks that keep her in (relative) safety and comfort. Then a young girl (Sarinna Boggs) breaches her defences, forcing Asha to re-evaluate her priorities all over again. Visually, The Calm Beyond is a treat, the murky green and yellow colour palette providing a striking contrast to the bright neon of the world before the disaster, as seen in flashback. While Wong is content to check off every box on the list of apocalyptic clichés, his film stands apart by offering a quiet meditation on family, grief, and redemption, which makes the violent outbursts - when they come - all the more brutally effective.
