Summary

Horror thriller starring Omari Hardwick and Loretta Devine. High-flying lawyer Marquis crashes the plane taking his family to his father's funeral in the Appalachian backwoods. When he wakes up to find himself being tended to by hoodoo practitioner Eloise, things take a turn for the macabre.

High-flying lawyer Marquis T Woods (Omari Hardwick) is forced back into his nightmare childhood in this glossy but ploddingly predictable folk horror. When his estranged, abusive father dies, Marquis crashes the plane taking his family to the funeral in the Appalachian backwoods. He wakes up in an attic, being tended to by a creepy woman (Loretta Devine), who cheerily tells him that she's used his bodily fluids to create an effigy of him called a Boogity. She says it's to help in his recovery, but Marquis is not convinced, especially as the rest of his family is still missing, and there are three newly dug graves in the garden... The film starts promisingly, touching on themes of race, class snobbery and toxic masculinity, and there's some effective, stomach-churning mutilation and moments of tension. However, what at first appears to be voodoo version of Stephen King's Misery soon descends into a repetitive, by-the-numbers thriller with a clunky and contrived climax.
