As conventional as it gets, this biopic of one-legged college wrestling champion Anthony Robles manages to inspire despite its somewhat predictable trajectory. Jharrel Jerome stars as the Mesa, Arizona teenager, who is determined to prove himself as a wrestler. But Robles is forced to combat scepticism within the sport and the contempt of his stepfather (Bobby Cannavale), a disciplinarian prison guard. With one leg digitally erased, Jerome plays Robles with affecting conviction. Cannavale is persuasively odious as the abusive parent who alternates between lectures about choices and beating his wife (Jennifer Lopez), who is struggling to raise five kids and keep the family home during the subprime mortgage crisis. Like Don Cheadle, who plays a wrestling coach, Lopez is poorly served by a screenplay that often resorts to caricature and cliché. But debuting director William Goldenberg (the longtime editor of co-producer Ben Affleck) slots the pieces into place with assurance, right down to having Jerome stand in Rocky Balboa's footsteps outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
