An endearingly wayward comedy, a sort of On the Town reworked for Liverpool, with the Beatles replacing Leonard Bernstein and Leonid Brezhnev replacing Miss Turnstiles. Frank Clarke's ingenious and surely ad-libbed script starts when a Soviet ship docks in Liverpool and decants two sailors Alfred Molina and Peter Firth for shore leave. Two scouse girls (Margi Clarke and Alexandra Pigg) pick them up, have a good time and one of them falls in love, prompting the letter to the Kremlin. It's clever, vibrant, sexy and energetically performed.
