Patrick Cremona

This endlessly compelling and captivating documentary feature from David Attenborough sees the veteran broadcaster turn his attention towards the depths of our oceans. He outlines their importance for the general health of the planet before forensically detailing the ways in which they have been exploited and,in some places, completely ruined. In his late-career work, Attenborough's genuine anger at those who have allowed the natural world to fall into disrepair has been increasingly prevalent, and here the most damning consternation is reserved for the practice of industrial bottom trawling. The scenes in which the destructive impact of this highly wasteful form of fishing are laid bare -with once-thriving underwater habitats transformed into desolate deserts -play out like pure unvarnished horror. Throughout, the underwater footage captured by directors Toby Nowlan, Colin Butfield, Keith Scholey and their crew is typically astonishing, while Attenborough does a stellar job of offering a clear and optimistic solution without minimising the threats. Unfolding across just over 90 minutes, Ocean is by turns awe-inspiring, informative, deeply angering and cautiously hopeful.
