James Mottram

Asif Kapadia (Senna) delivers a sobering state-of-the-world drama documentary that will likely shake you to the core. Examining where we're at politically, socially and environmentally, Kapadia attempts to draw links between climate change, the rise to power of authoritarian-leaning world leaders like Trump and Putin, and the insidious influence of billionaire tech moguls like Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg. It's a brave exercise, albeit one that feels slightly scattershot in its scaremongering. Alongside the potent doom-mongering runs futurist interludes, set in the eponymous year, as Samantha Morton plays a lone survivor, scavenging to stay alive and lamenting the bleakness of the world. Inspired by Chris Marker's seminal 1962 essay film La Jetée, 2073 can feel a little heavy-handed and unsatisfying. Where it scores, though, is with its proliferation of plain-speaking experts, with political observers George Monbiot and Anne Applebaum bringing credibility to Kapadia's ominous overview.
