A star rating of 4 out of 5.

The Coen brothers' deep affection for the western genre shines through every frame in this anthology of six unconnected stories of frontier life. Tim Blake Nelson kicks off proceedings in the first comic vignette that gives the film its name, but there are darker, more sinister interpretations of a staple cinema form from a formidable troupe of players, including Liam Neeson, Tom Waits, Zoe Kazan, Tyne Daly and Brendan Gleeson. Originally planned as an episodic TV series, it benefits hugely from being watched as a whole, the maverick film-makers relishing the opportunity to wrong-foot viewers by flitting from the slapstick to the sombre and all points in between. This is a heartfelt love poem to the Wild West as it's been presented previously on the big screen in myriad hues, every individual tale indelibly stamped with the Coen mark of quality. How the West was wonderful, indeed.
