A star rating of 3 out of 5.

The directorial debut of Carlo Mirabella-Davis is a bold, assured, if simplistic work based around the pica eating disorder. Haley Bennett plays Hunter, a newly pregnant trophy wife, whose idyllic existence takes an alarming turn when she develops a compulsion to consume inedible everyday objects. As her husband and his family tighten their control over her life, she is forced to confront the dark secret underlying her condition. Functioning as a warped fairy tale, Swallow poses provocative questions about the expectations imposed on women, and the psychologically damaging effects of a patriarchal culture. Bennett delivers a knockout performance, and the film recalls the likes of Alfred Hitchcock's Marnie in its exploration of mental ill health. Never as visually upsetting as it might have been, Swallow forgoes body horror shocks in favour of a sensitive, compassionate exploration of one woman's anguish.
