Margaret Qualley, a Golden Globe nominee for The Substance, is on significantly less surreal ground here. As a nurse named Maya, she answers an ad to buy some furniture - and is asked out by the seller, Charlie (Gabriel Basso). We follow them from this sweet beginning through to their eventual marriage. Maya, who grew up with absent parents, is welcomed by Charlie's mum and dad (Catherine Keener and Corey Johnson); in return, she introduces him to her best friend Jason (Patrick Schwarzenegger). Just as everything seems perfect with her new extended family, along comes a sadly familiar global pandemic... With a screenplay that was the subject of a bidding war - eventually selling to Amazon for around $2m - this should be something really special. On the screen, however, it's a bit stiff. As Maya eventually travels overseas and meets up with Aaron Pierre's hunky Felix (superb, if underwritten), things should liven up a bit, but there's still something rather cold about it all. What begins as an engaging romance dwindles into a meandering, unsatisfying, self-important fumble.
