The US government's program of secret mind-control experiments using psychedelic drugs provides the title and the backdrop to this engaging thriller. Anson Mount plays a clinical psychologist who can't get funding for his research into the therapeutic effects of LSD... until the CIA steps in. A former intelligence agent himself, writer/director Joseph Sorrentino paints a dark and unglamorous portrait of this insidious milieu. Mount is quietly excellent as the ethical man fighting for control of his project, while Jason Patric, Alon Aboutboul and (most disturbingly) Matt Dwyer entertain as shady handlers with even shadier objectives. There's much more to be said about this chapter in US history, and the film's sudden shift into one-man vigilantism in the later stages is jarring. But Sorrentino delivers a sober and detailed film that proves absorbing throughout.
