This plodding neo-western thriller stars Guy Pearce as a small-town sheriff taking on a murderous gang of motorcyclists. A former Texas ranger, Jim Dillon has sworn off using guns following a hostage situation gone wrong. However, when his town is threatened by petrol-headed rednecks led by Diablo (Final Destination's Devon Sawa), Dillon soon takes up arms once more to dish out Dirty Harry-style justice. The ensuing violence - in which townsfolk end up as collateral damage - feels in spectacularly poor taste in a film that fully glorifies its weaponry. The pedestrian direction is at least competent, but it can do nothing to rescue a morally dubious plot constructed from a litany of clichés, lifeless characters, cheesy dialogue and humdrum action sequences. Posters for classic westerns in the background of certain scenes hints that the film is meant to be taken as a modern spin on the genre. However, by the time Pearce gallops down the high street on horseback firing at the bad guys, it feels less like homage and more like horrifically misguided.
