Calum Baker

This drama from Terence Davies turned out to be the great British director's swan song - but what a fitting way to bow out. It details the life of poet Siegfried Sassoon, played in different periods by Jack Lowden (Slow Horses) and Peter Capaldi. There's a lot to pack in, but Davies essays all the key details - including Sassoon's First World War service, gay romantic entanglements and conversion to Catholicism - with precision. What could have been a stuffy and episodic portrait is given real life and a haunting emotive weight through the careful performances, Davies's deft, witty screenplay and the potent use of Sassoon's own verse.
