The old Latin proverb observes that omne animal post coitum triste est (after sex, all animals are sad), which would explain why the four libidinous characters in this drama seem so perpetually depressed. In this autumnal chamber piece, they do it - motivated less by pleasure or love than by loneliness and revenge - al fresco, in hotels, cars and even hallways, while their spouses sleep upstairs. Rumpled academic Jack (Mark Ruffalo) is married to alcoholic Terry (Laura Dern) but having an affair with elegant Edith (Naomi Watts) who's married to Jack's best friend Hank (Peter Krause), a creative-writing teacher who sleeps mostly with his students. Painfully poignant at times, the misery quotient is cut by stabs of much-needed humour, while the superb acting nails through looks and gestures what the characters can't actually say in words.
