Summary

Matt Glasby

Estranged sister and brother Ashley (Alexandra Essoe) and Scott (Marshall Williams) take their partners (Matt Hamilton and Jordan Claire Robbins) and another pal (Richard Harmon) on a camping trip into the woods in James Kondelik's muddled survival horror. Soon, Scott has fallen into a large, spike-filled hole - the pitfall of the title - and they're fighting for their lives against a mysterious hunter (played by wrestler Randy Couture) and his many traps. After an exciting opening, and some dramatic backstory, the film falls into a trap of its own, taking an age to get to the good stuff while stranding us with Scott for some interminable scenes of self-reproach. It's a shame, because when it sticks to its backwoods slasher USP it's much more effective, with striking cinematography by Robert Zawistowski and some gnarly kills. However, cutting away from the action back to Scott's plight gets tiresome, the characters are annoying, and the siblings' long-simmering resentment is so clunkily explained you might find yourself cheering for the bad guy.
