The tale of the first successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953 is almost as well-worn as the mountain path itself. Still, director Jennifer Peedom does tread some new ground by focusing the story not on Kiwi adventurer Edmund Hillary (Tom Hiddleston) but Nepalese-Indian mountaineer Tenzing Norgay, aka Sherpa Tenzing, played by Tibetan actor Genden Phuntsok. We follow our hero through his formative years until he enters the world of mountaineering, where his heritage puts him at odds both with his fellow Sherpas (who look down on a non-Tibetan) and the British mountaineers (who just look down on him). It's a laudable effort to give the real hero of the expedition his due. Unfortunately, Phuntsok struggles to bring the depth and reality you'd hope for in a biopic like this, and you come away a little mystified as to what drove him so hard to make history. Still, once the Everest attempt kicks off with a series of beautiful, tense climbing set pieces (actually filmed on location in Nepal), you'll be itching to strap on some crampons yourself.
