Released at the height of the 1980s slasher craze, Howard Avedis's low-budget horror was an unlikely box office success. It stars Mary Beth McDonough - better known as Erin Walton from TV's The Waltons - and David Wallace as two small-town high school kids who get caught up in a mystery that has something to do with the local mortuary. Seeing as the place is run by B-movie legend Christopher George (The Exterminator, City of the Living Dead), they're probably right to be a little suspicious. Beginning with a shocking slow-motion murder, the film seems primed to follow the slasher playbook step by step. However, it ends up closer in spirit to small-town conspiracy flicks such as Gary Sherman's rather better Dead & Buried, from the same year. There's an effective score by the prolific John Cacavas, and an energetic early appearance from Bill Paxton as George's nerdy son. Even so, it's a bit of a slog, with a meandering plot, awkward performances and nowhere near enough action to justify cult movie status.
