Director Greg Kwedar subverts prison movie clichés with his affecting and thoughtful tale of creativity in the clink. Colman Domingo plays prisoner John "Divine G" Whitfield, the effective leader of a theatre group in the titular New York state facility. When hardened inmate Clarence "Divine Eye" Maclin (playing himself) joins the troupe and challenges its methods, G's position is tested. Drawing on a 2005 magazine article, Kwedar boosts his tale's authenticity by casting real-life alumni of the Rehabilitation Through the Arts programme alongside professional actors. Maclin is a notably potent presence, his furrowed features cracking incrementally to suggest well-concealed depths. Domingo is quieter but equally moving as the lifer awaiting his clemency hearing while the theatre group's ambitiously goofy production - Hamlet mixed with time-travel fantasy - develops. But as opening night approaches, the play is less the thing here than the fraught and therapeutic process of production. Shot and scored gracefully, Sing Sing spotlights its inmates' choppy search for purpose and selfhood amid despair with tough, tender power.
