One could argue that the posh seriousness of Downton Abbey and other British heritage dramas is only a whisper away from parody. Fackham Hall has turned this whisper into a shout, spoofing the aristocracy in the style of Airplane! or The Naked Gun.In 1930s England, Lord and Lady Davenport (Damian Lewis and Katherine Waterston) face losing their enormous wealth unless they can marry their daughters into money. Thus, the starry-eyed Rose (Thomasin McKenzie) finds herself being courted by the repulsive Archibald (Tom Felton). This is awkward, because she's just fallen in love with penniless orphan Eric (Ben Radcliffe). Based on an idea by comedian Jimmy Carr and his brother Patrick, the spoof's double entendres, puns and slapstick gags come thick and fast. A few do land, the sillier the better. Others, such as an inexplicable recurring Beatles gag, are merely puzzling. A surprisingly elegant cast includes Anna Maxwell Martin, Sue Johnston and Tom Goodman-Hill, with Hayley Mills as a Bridgerton-inspired narrator. Yet, with its core idea stretched too thinly, perhaps this would have worked better as a French and Saunders sketch circa the release 2001's Gosford Park.
