The simple, haunting notion of liminal space is a pervasive element of this eerie horror from YouTuber-turned-director Kane Parsons, whose series of shorts about a vast labyrinth of empty rooms started going viral in 2022 and laid the foundation for this stellar debut feature. An impressive Chiwetel Ejiofor stars as Clark, an embittered furniture-store manager with a failed career and marriage, as well as a concerned therapist (played by Sentimental Value star Renate Reinsve). He discovers a mysterious doorway in the shop's basement that takes him down a rabbit hole of infinite, blandly decorated rooms containing off-kilter furniture and bric-a-brac. But this is no Wonderland, because the more the curious Clark explores, the creepier the interconnected areas become. Is anyone there, or is something else lurking in the gloom? Films like Vivarium(2019) and Exit 8(2025) have made a virtue of seemingly mundane spaces that mask palpable, existential terror, and Backrooms is no different, though with its own great sense of the surreal. Parsons's assured direction of the slow-burn menace, peppered with disquieting narrative clues and tonal shifts - not to mention the remarkable production design with its fascinating metamorphosis from banal to downright uncanny - makes for a chiller to savour.
