Antonio Banderas delivers the smouldering, action-hero goods in this revenge flick with a twist. He plays Pittsburgh lawyer Frank Valera, whose high-flying life is shattered after his wife and daughter are brutally murdered, with no one paying the price. What sets this intense vigilante thriller apart from similar fare, though, is Frank's decision to adopt the Stoic teachings of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius ("The best revenge is to be unlike your enemy"). Frank literally lets his actions speak louder than words by taking a vow of silence until the killer is brought to book. Naturally, he must learn combat skills, too, which come in handy when he encounters hulking, tattooed thugs in his search for justice. There are cracking fight scenes, while Karl Urban as a sympathetic cop and Paz Vega as a neighbourhood nurse add solid support. However, it's a cameoing Robert Forster as Frank's embittered father-in-law who provides the acting class.
