Gabrielle Rose watches videos of her dead brother while pursuing a movie project about his life. She gets involved with aspiring actor Michael McManus who, coincidentally, resembles her sibling, and is himself a lust object for lovelorn Arsinée Khanjian. Following on from his similar exercise in Family Viewing (1987), writer/director Atom Egoyan returns to our ambiguous relationship with technology, particularly video, and he successfully connects the characters in his strange story through the medium. But in focusing on intellectual dissection, and images which cloak familiar objects in a hyper-reality, the director sacrifices the emotional payoff essential in this story of a three-way relationship.
