This horror spin-off from film-maker Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead) is a well-directed, appropriately gnarly Alien film anchored by terrific performances from Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson. When a group of young space colonists seek to escape their mining colony, their mission quickly goes awry when a batch of fearsome xenomorphs is let loose in an abandoned space station. Feeding into the classic iconography of the franchise, Alien: Romulus sometimes feels like a lovingly made tribute act, with throwbacks to iconic deaths and famous one-liners. The retro-futurist aesthetic, brought to life with great tactility, is clearly indebted to the first two films, while the ghoulish re-animation of a character from the original film is an iffy creative choice. However, there are several well-executed action sequences that largely use practical effects, plus a nightmarish twist in the final act. The result is a tense, engaging spectacle that should satisfy both existing fans and newcomers to the world.
