James Mottram

A Manchester meet-cute causes a university campus-wide furore in this sweet, spirited romcom. Owen (Spike Fearn), a sound engineer at his local student union, meets Emily (Sadie Soverall) on a night out. But when he realises the number she gave him is missing a digit, he is driven on a wild search for the girl of his dreams. Aiding him is another Emily (Angourie Rice), a psychology student who is secretly studying Owen for her paper on romantic attachments. Directed with verve by Alicia MacDonald and smartly scripted by Rachel Hirons (A Guide to Second Date Sex), this buzzy tale makes excellent use of Manchester's hotspots, especially the bars along Canal Street. There's even a cameo from Stockport band Blossoms, nestling alongside a cool soundtrack with cuts from Billie Eilish and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. With Fearn boasting oodles of charisma in the lead, and a story that deals intelligently with the madness of love, you will be charmed.
