Glaswegian director Jan Darnley-Smith was a stalwart of the Children's Film Foundation and this is the best of his eight outings. Mike (Stephen Brown), John (Mark Ward) and Jane (Cheryl Vidgen) have high hopes that their favourite hideout, Hermitage House, will be turned into a youth club. Yet, despite the protests (and erratic driving) of activist Miss Woollie (Patricia Hayes), the corrupt deputy mayor (John Bluthal) has cut a deal with a property developer and contractor Mr Prendergast (Ronnie Barker) dispatches lackeys Ron (Bernard Cribbins) and Perry (Terry Scott) to make a start on the demolition. The hapless duo haven't bargained for 17th-century spooks Sir Jocelyn Hermitage (Jimmy Edwards) and Master Thomas Dogood (Graham Stark), however, who have no intention of surrendering their abode. The special effects involved in the ghosts walking through walls and Stark carrying his head under his arm are heavily reliant on Mélièsian double exposures, but there's some amusing animated machinery in the rousing finale. But the star names alone make this a relishable treat, with Cribbins and Scott sportingly throwing themselves into the slapstick mayhem.
