Sir David Attenborough says his meeting with mountain gorillas in Rwanda in 1978, while filming Life on Earth for the BBC, is the most significant interaction with wildlife in his whole career. Certainly the moment where a young gorilla named Pablo playfully sits at the feet of a visibly delighted presenter is up there with the most famous shots in all natural history film-making.
In this new film, Attenborough himself reflects on his connection with gorillas, while continuing Pablo’s story: he became the leader of his group, and part of an epic tale of families growing and changing, with some rivalries and splits along the way. The thread running through it all is the deep respect the great naturalist feels for these animals: as he shares his thoughts and memories, affection and awe infuse his every word.
