Summary

Amilie Noblet directs a feature-length spin-off from the acclaimed French TV series which ventures behind the scenes of fictional talent agency ASK (Agence Samuel Kerr), witnessing staff and celebrity clientele in emotional freefall. Call My Agent! The Movie is set five years after ASK closed its doors for good and Andrea (Camille Cottin) is poised to make her feature film directorial debut. Alas, she has an argument with her producer and her lead actor quits so Andrea enlists the help of reality TV producer Noemie (Laure Calamy) to get the project back on track. Andrea discovers she is pulling in a different direction to Noemie as she recasts each role and recovers from a series of on-set disasters. Worst of all, she becomes embroiled in an acrimonious legal battle for custody of her daughter. George Clooney and Eva Longoria cameo as heightened versions of themselves.

Review

Huw Fullerton

While various international remakes have tried, nothing ever quite recaptured the brilliance of Call My Agent! The original series could have been awkward, even smug (a comedy drama about French celebrity reps where the starry actors play themselves… really?), but instead it was glossy, funny and endlessly inventive.

Perhaps it was the setting – French cinema’s unique cocktail of commercial interest, artistic expression, pure glamour and passionate emotion makes for great farce – or maybe it’s just that a night at the Césars will always seem cooler than a trip to the Baftas (with apologies to Prime Video’s 2022 British remake Ten Percent).

Either way, this return five years after the last episode – in a feature-length, higher-budget story, no less – is a pleasure, so brilliantly recapturing that frantic, funny spirit, it’s like the series never ended.

Though some things have changed, of course. In the years since Agence Samuel Kerr disbanded, thick-skinned Andréa (Camille Cottin) has turned director, and her first movie is descending into chaos. She loses one actor, misses signing George Clooney (sending himself up in a particularly starry cameo) and can’t get a wild boar to follow the script. Soon, she’ll need the help of her old friends to claw back millions in lost budget and save the film. Bonne chance.
